I am a visual artist whose work explores time, history, memory, and belonging.
I am (still:) delighted to have been awarded the Leith School of Art Prize at the Society of Scottish Artists Annual Exhibition in 2024.
Inspired by data, poetry and literature my work seeks to question and understand our sense of belonging. When does us become them? People have always moved, through necessity, force or choice. It is who we are. What is belonging? Whatever definition, it is changing. I’m interested in everyday symbols. What stories are flags and statues telling us about our place in the world?
This exhibition explores these issues. It features photographs taken during a residency at the Island Darkroom on the Isle of Lewis and was informed by a Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Travel Scholarship that allowed me to explore Europe’s borderlands, old and new.
Photography is my first love and my sketchbook. Working mainly with analogue film I use double exposures and a continuous frame. The transformational nature of printmaking is key. I create layers that rub against each other creating harmony and tension. Materiality is important: plaster, silk and barbed wire. There will be flags...
