Create your own alter ego and subvert traditional notions of self-portraiture.
The workshop will begin with a discussion of relevant references, including contemporary artists (e.g. Cindy Sherman, Leigh Bowery, Claude Cahoun and Grayson Perry), selfie culture, costuming and drag.
It will then be your turn to create your own alter ego for the day: you’ll don costumes, wigs, make-up and/or face paint – anything goes! You are encouraged to consider who you might become prior to the workshop and bring in any items you wish to dress up in, or props which can be incorporated into your setup.
You will be lead through a series of self-portrait drawing exercises, before guided experimentation with a variety of mixed-media painting materials. With plenty of individual support from the tutor, you will each create a sustained self-portrait as – and of – your alter ego.
All core materials and equipment included. Concession rates are available for those in receipt of income-assessed benefits.
