Course Staff

Explore abstraction through the basic elements of landscape.

On this course, we will reconsider what landscape can be. Through a series of structured exercises that simplify colour, form and process, we will investigate the foundations of landscape painting while building the confidence to move beyond traditional representation. We will learn how to refine what we see and discover how abstraction can deepen our response to the environment.

Each week will begin with a discussion of modern and contemporary abstract landscape artists, whose work will inspire a series of quick experimental studies. Throughout the course, we will explore expressive mark-making, geometric structure and experiment with materials including charcoal, paint and found natural elements.

By the end of the course, we will each have developed a body of experimental works on paper and a more personal, expressive visual language in relation to landscape.

Relevant artists include Anne Appleby, Jill Baroff, Maria Lalic, Richard Long, William McKeown, David Nash, Michelle Stuart, Herman de Vries, Agnes Martin, Roger Ackling, Jason Martin, Sean Scully, Joan Mitchell, Harminder Judge, Lindsay Adams, Ilse D’Hollander, Zhou Li, and Callum Innes.
