An introduction to the beautiful world of making your own paints with egg tempera.

This workshop gives you the opportunity to get close to pigments – to see, touch and feel pure colour – and to understand the process of making your own paint. Using just pigments, eggs and water, we will spend a day learning new techniques to create a series of small-scale paintings using this ancient medium.

The day will start with an introduction to pigments, their histories and characteristics, and examples of how artists have used this method of painting throughout history. Following a tutor-led demonstration on how to make your own egg tempera paints, we will spend the rest of the afternoon making our own paintings, giving thought to colour, mark, tone and shape, introducing a more contemporary approach to painting.
