Explore the creative possibilities of lino block and screen printing for textiles in this hands-on printmaking course.
We’ll begin the week with an inspiring introduction to contemporary artists who blend printmaking with textiles and fibre arts, including Timorous Beasties, Alice Kettle and Delita Martin. These examples will set the scene for experimenting with pattern, texture and expressive mark-making on cloth.
Focusing on two techniques ideally suited to fabric—lino block printing and silkscreen printing—we will explore both repeat pattern design and a more intuitive, expressive monoprint approach. Using hand-cut stencils and carved lino blocks, we’ll develop original designs and see how each process offers different creative possibilities.
With step-by-step guidance from the tutor, we will learn how to carve and print lino blocks, cut and prepare screen-printing stencils, set up a printing table, select appropriate textile inks, and successfully print onto cotton canvas. There will also be the opportunity to bring your own fabric or garment to personalise and print, making the course perfect for both experimentation and creating unique finished pieces.
All core materials and equipment included. Concession rates are available for those in receipt of income-assessed benefits.
NB: The course culminates in an informal exhibition of the week’s work, ending at 5.30pm on the final day.
