With landscape as a starting point, explore techniques for combining collage with painting.
Collage is an excellent tool for experimenting with compositional ideas, breaking down a subject into simple shapes, and exploring colour palettes, layering and surface texture. With guidance from the tutor, you’ll be encouraged to gradually develop your ideas, allowing for the introduction of abstraction into your artworks.
Looking at the work of artists including Barbara Rae, Ann Cowan and John Brown, we’ll transcribe an existing artwork into collage to practice tone and colour matching. We’ll then prepare our own textured papers using paint, printmaking and rubbing techniques, using landscape sketches and photographs as reference images. We’ll move on to layering collage with paint, experimenting with its translucency and opacity.
Towards the end of the week, we’ll create a more sustained mixed media artwork (or small series). Throughout the course, we will gain a deeper understanding of composition, learn to simplify subjects into shapes and colours, and develop practical techniques for combining painting and collage.
All core materials and equipment included. Concession rates are available for those in receipt of income-assessed benefits.
NB: The course culminates in an informal exhibition of the week’s work, ending at 5.30pm on the final day.
