Create lively Matisse-inspired paintings and collages using acrylics, oils, and vibrant colour.

We’ll start the week painting from a still-life setup inspired by Goldfish by Henri Matisse, working in acrylics. With demonstrations from the tutor, this offers an excellent introduction to colour theory, brush handling and palette etiquette. We’ll also create a set of collages from the same setup, helping us to compose images using flat, graphic shapes. These collages will then inform our larger paintings later in the week.

In the second half of the course, we’ll move on to oil paints and work from a new, lively and contemporary setup, taking inspiration from Matisse’s Window paintings. Here, we can use expressive brushwork and vibrant colour to develop confident, direct paintings. In the final part of the course, we’ll combine our new-found collage techniques with acrylic paints and prepared papers to create a final Matisse-inspired still life piece.

All core materials and equipment included. Concession rates are available for those in receipt of income-assessed benefits.

NB: The course culminates in an informal exhibition of the week’s work, ending at 5.30pm on the final day.
